Author: Christiane Pieper, Gita Wolf
Gita Wolf – publisher at Tara Books – was locked down on her farm in South India during the pandemic when she received anunexpected gift: a small puppy with large brown eyes. It was love at first sight. Those who knew Gita were astonished, since she had always been afraid of dogs. But this promised to be the start of a new relationship, one that was life changing. As the bond between Gita and her dog deepened over time, she became increasingly curious about what it was that they shared.Did dogs and humans feel the same way? Gita could only guess what her dog was feeling from the way he was behaving. Her curiosity about what was behind it all led to an extended period of reading and research into the emotional life of dogs – how dogs and humans are alike, and in what ways we are different. What she discovered was fascinating, and she felt there was a book in there.Gita didn’t want a dry and didactic account of the inner lives of dogs. There was so much more to life with a dog – love and companionship, but also energy, play and chaos. To come up with something light and jolly, she thought of Christiane Pieper, an old illustrator friend. Christiane had grown up on a farm in Germany, surrounded by dogs. She loved drawing animals, and had a great sense of humour. Together, they came up with a story about a girl called Nina and her dog Max, made up of short comic strips. Each of these hilarious scenes was built around moods and feelings they thought important. Going into this in more detail would take away from the lightness of the book, so they brought it in as an afterword for the curious reader – who could then return to the scenes in the book with a more nuanced understanding of what was happening.
