Fable Animals

Our first visual anthology of traditional Indian art was published in 2003. Called Beasts of India, it featured renderings of animals in a number of folk and tribal art traditions from across the country. The book went on to become something of a classic, staying in print over decades. It captures two important facets of Indian traditional art: the first is the ubiquitous presence of animals – both tame and wild – in all the art styles. The second is the range of imaginative possibilities in the rendering of a beast. Each animal is quirky, but recognizable. Recently, Beasts of India was up for a reprint again... and this time we wondered if we could conceive of a different way of approaching the subject.
