Author: Flávia Bomfim
In 1919, a there was a revolt of sailors on a ship in Brazilian waters – it was led by Joao Candido, the son of a freed man and an enslaved woman. The rebellion was quelled and Joao arrested, but his defiant spirit lived on, turning him into a folk hero in Brazil. Flavia’s version of the tale transforms a piece of local history into a universal fable. Such inspiring stories ofresistance against oppression deserve to be better known, adding to our understanding of global colonial history.Flavia’s poetic text is based on extensive archival research, including historical photographs and newspaper articles. Her illustrations are similarly layered. She uses actual photographs in the form of cyanotype images on textile – evoking the blue of the ocean – and overlays them with her responses in the form of embroidery. The stitchery is equally a tribute to Joao Candido, who had taken to embroidering during his prison sentence. With an introduction by Flavia, the book uses techniques like cyanotype and embroidery to illustrate a tale of revolt.• Special Mention, Bologna Bookfair 2023• Finalist in AIELIJ Prize, Brazil 2023• Award winner, Nami Concours 2021
