  • Wool. Silk. Resistance. cover

Walther König, Köln

Wool. Silk. Resistance.

$120.00

Throughout history and across cultures, carpets, weavings and tapestries have been favored by artists as a vehicle for protest and political expression. What makes these forms so ripe for this type of discourse? This publication presents a vast selection of textile artworks from the past 25 years by artists who deal with individual forms of resistance—including targeted discrimination, racism, trauma and ecocide. Centuries- old textile practices are brought into dialogue with contemporary techniques and concepts. In these artworks, the utilitarian, decorative and spiritual aspects of arug, carpet or tapestry are reinterpreted, opening up discourses on the established hierarchies between applied and fine art, and whose relationship they redefine.
