Author: Calle, Sophie
This artists book (and exhibition) emerged after Sophie Calle's home was hit by a storm that damaged many of her artworks, including from her series 'Les Aveugles'. Calle decided to "resurrect" these damaged works, presenting them alongside other rain-damaged artworks: bouquets of dried flowers; photographs of graves; paintings of her mother’s last word. Finally, she added things from her life that she could not part with, creating a series that hovers between preservation and decay. Calle was particularly inspired by an idea by Roland Topor, in which he buried an old sweater that he could neither give away nor throw away. The subsequent exhibition and its corresponding artist’s book contend with art that fades with the passage of time. Inserted within the pages are 15 colour images of the exhibition display, which the reader can add to any page of the book, whether indicated by the picture-frame-printed corners or otherwise.
ISBN 9782330193614. Actes Sud. pb. 80 pages. 15 colour, 12 b/w ills. 18.4 x 12.7 cm.
