Gathered together in this volume are images of the lives of American-Japanese citizens sent to internment camps at Manzanar in the Owens Valley in California during World War II. These images were largely taken by Dorothea Lange and Ansel Adams who documented life in the camp for the War Relocation Agency (WRA) and The Manzanar Project respectively. Notably many of Lange's photographs were seized by the government and largely unseen by the public for a half century. These images express the dignity and determination of the Japanese Americans in the face of injustice and humiliation. Today the tragic circumstances surrounding displaced and detained people around the world only strengthen the impact of these photos taken 75 years ago.
