Author: John McPhee, Beverly Knight, Terence Maloon (eds.)
Published in 2012, this title follows the heralded practice of Mornington Island-based artist Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori. Born c. 1924 on Bentinck Island, Queensland, Gabori had little contact with non-Kaiadilt people until the 1940s, when due to water scarcity she was forced to leave her homeland for Mornington Island. Throughout her life Gabori has been an accomplished producer of traditional Pandanus fibre and Hibiscus bark crafts. She took up painting at the Mornington Peninsula Arts and Crafts Centre in 2005 and has since gained national attention for her large acrylic paintings. In his essay, John McPhee explores the waysin which Gabori’s intensely colourful and vibrant canvases expressthe landscape of her tropical homelands and places such as Dibirdibi (Rock Cod) Country. The intuitive way she mixes colour on the canvas, continually reappraising forms to set them in dynamic relationships, gives a sense of tidal fluidity that corresponds to the stories associated with her Country, Bentinck Island.
