The sunny coasts of Bulgaria and Croatia turn into intensively used, high-density landscapes of the tourism industry in the summer season. This book traces the different large-scale spatial and architectural strategies that have been used to create vacation spots here since the 1950s and continue to develop them to the present day. It shows (late) modern holiday architecture and resorts of impressive quality and typological diversity, which were able to exist as socialist leisure spaces and marketable products at the same time. Above all, however, it examines the variety of economic and physical transformations that followed the change of regime and the privatisation of businesses: from unused ruins to careful renovations to excessive building developments, which have sparked massive public protest to this day.
