Over the years, Mario Moore has observed that the portraits of esteemed figures in the halls of elite institutions are mostly white and male. As Moore was selected as a Princeton University Hodder Fellow, he set out to meet Black men and women who work around Princeton in blue-collar jobs and let the art-making process unfold from their interactions. In the resulting works, Moore redefines the colonial gaze for his subjects, allowing them to look directly out with an unflinching stare.
