Author: Tony Dupé
Translations, Conversations and Atmospheres is a fun and self-revealing book which contains creative exercises (writing, drawing, sounding, recording) to help the reader understand and develop their life-connected and musical relationship with sound.Written for music makers of all kinds, the book is intended for people who identify more as creative than technical and would like to gain confidence in recording themselves or being recorded. The book draws together perspectives from the fields of experimental music, field recording, music recording, sound studies and sound art. Bespoke illustrations express the ideas and exercises whilst conveying everyday people in domestic and community settings. It recasts sound, listening and recording in language and concepts that are artistic and human-centred.Starting with phone recording at home, the manual ultimately guides the reader through basic recording with a computer at home. The final project is to create a new folio of artworks, writing and recorded music about their home.Translations, Conversations & Atmospheres is an inspiring, informing and encouraging companion towards a relationship with sound recording. It is unique in this field but could be compared to Julia Cameron's The Artist Way and Jeff Tweedy's How to Write One Song in its personal and artistically productive nature. Tony Dupé is an experienced and respected music artist, producer and educator. This is his first book which was written during his recent PhD. Illustrations by Emily Sweetman who is a music maker and visual artist who values domesticity, community, family and artistic expression.
